Blatant misuse of public property in a tough battle for the presidency of Sri Lanka

(January 07, Colombo - Lanka Polity) A written complaint lodged by the All Sri Lanka Harbor Workers' Common Union leader Chandrasiri Mahagamage before the Election Commissioner points to shocking revelation of blatant misuse of public property for the presidential campaign of President Mahinda Rajapaksa. The Minister in charge of the Ports Authority  is Chamal Rajapaksa, the elder brother of the President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

The complainers  say that 300 workers and 70 vehicles of the Sri Lanka Ports Authority have been deployed in presidential propaganda and election violence. The union has exposed the names of the employees and the numbers of the vehicles.

The personnel  have been stationed in three places in Colombo, Embilipitiya in south and Dambulla in north for election operations.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa is using or rather misusing  the platforms of the Sri Lanka Ports Authority for his rallies. Ports Authority employees have been deployed in erecting the stages with overtime and bata allowances violating the election laws, the union points out.

The President  has not spared a single pebble unmoved in the state sector in a tough presidential battle with his ex-Army chief Sarath Fonseka. Senior public servants like his powerful brother defense secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa who has no right for party politics due to his public-paid position is also running a series of seminars in support of his brother blatantly violating the election laws and the establishment code of the public service. Even the President's Secretary, a senior civil servant is also talking in public in support of Rajapaksa. Thousands of people are summoned to a massive tent set up in the Prime Minister's place now he occupies for meetings and they are treated with  food and beverages. Nobody knows who bears the costs as the government says no public funds are used for them.

On the New Year eve, the President  delivered an SMS to all 12 million mobile phone users via the service providers. Many identified the act as an infringement of the privacy of the phone users and the President's unauthorized New Year greeting finally turned to be a spam.

The use of pubic media for the President's propaganda and for slinging  mud at his major opponent was so irresistible to the Election Commissioner and he took measures to ban five programmes of state TV for its notorious content.

Police also came under criticism  of the Election Commissioner for not removing the illegal mega billboards with the images of the President at every nook and corner of the island.

  4. A change is needed indeed! But there is no alternative? Fonseka got in to politics for personal grudges against Gotabhaya and is arousing the trouble by capitalizing on Rajapaksa corruptions. That does not make him a better candidate. Unfortunately in this election the Sri Lankan are helpless and they have to select the better out of two bad candidates.

  5. It is informative and interesting for a Govt.'s employee to stand up for the cheer of Union contributing members and bashing against the very Institution he and his family enjoying a comfortable life along with thousands of unionist paying a considerable sum per year as Union dues.

Any loyal employee's primary duty is to bring such 'unacceptable engagements' to the attention of Higher Authority such as the Minister of Ports Authority. If this individual has no guts to act so he could have easily contacted the President through reliable sources. This approach is the easiest. Unlike during earlier Governments now a days even a poor village folk can get through to President via a village monks who think their robes more powerful than elected MPs.

Unfortunately Union Boss does not See; when he uses the AC comfortable vans going up and down during his "whatever working hours". On either sides of this passing Official Port Authority's powerful vehicles; employees of Port Authority's
freely playing games: "Carom, Draft, Games of Cards including 'Pancha'. By the way these games are not on diagrams drawn on the floor but Port Authorities' own property reserved for the employees to relax during their rest periods or after work. Authority invest large amounts of cash in providing their daily meals with five curries including fish, mutton, chicken or any other verity including 'papadam!' No! they do want that! But sell right opposite all entrances openly; even when responsible Highly Influential Officers pass up and down from all "In and Out Gates."

Slightest headache; employees rush to various Medical Officers available right through working hours of the Authority, solely due for the convenience of all Employees thus preventing them going out of way to General Hospital or any other hospital distanced away.

For all 'Non working hours' till they sign out, they are paid for all ducted hours. Anything excess its 'OT'! Most gifted with a heavy pay packet. Union Boss Pay more attention to Union Dues than his own large Pay Packet.

By the way, fortunately we are blessed with an "Understanding, Kind, Considerate Bold Leader; the President himself available in listening to all humans concerns, whether the individual is a Port Authority Employee or not!
My Sincere advice is to make an effort to reach this Caring Compassionate Leader rather than going behind Union Boss.

Brother Employees, Clearly See: WHY-- written complaint lodged by the All Sri Lanka Harbor Workers' Common Union leader Chandrasiri Mahagamage before the Election Commissioner points to shocking revelation of blatant misuse of public property for the presidential campaign of President Mahinda Rajapaksa. I am not jumping for any conclusions. Suddenly why Chandrasiri Mahagamage wants to expose himself in displaying -
"I am a Clean, Obedient, Trusted Loyal Employee of the SL Port Authority!
"There is No Smoke without FIRE."
